Breaking: Fedora Asahi Remix 44 Released

Fedora Asahi Remix 44 has been officially released for Apple Silicon Macs, bringing the full Fedora Linux 44 experience to M1, M2, and M3 devices. The announcement, made by the Fedora Asahi Special Interest Group (SIG) in coordination with the Asahi Linux project, marks a significant milestone for Linux on ARM-based Mac hardware.

“This release incorporates all the exciting improvements from Fedora 44 while retiring our custom Mesa and virglrenderer packages in favor of upstream solutions,” said a Fedora Asahi spokesperson. “Users upgrading will now automatically transition to the standard Fedora repositories.”

Key Features and Changes

The flagship desktop environment is KDE Plasma 6.6, which includes the new Plasma Setup wizard—replacing the older Calamares installer—and Plasma Login Manager as the default greeter instead of SDDM. These changes apply only to fresh installations; existing upgrades retain their prior configurations.

A GNOME 50 variant is also available, matching what Fedora Linux offers on other architectures. Additionally, Fedora Asahi Remix 44 provides a Server edition for headless deployments and a Minimal image for users who wish to build a custom system from the ground up.

Background

Fedora Asahi Remix is a collaborative project between the Fedora Asahi SIG and the Asahi Linux team, dedicated to running Fedora Linux on Apple Silicon Macs. The project has evolved rapidly, with this release retiring vendor-specific graphics drivers in favor of upstream Mesa and virglrenderer packages provided by Fedora’s main repositories.

“Transitioning to upstream packages ensures better long-term maintainability and compatibility with future Fedora releases,” noted an Asahi Linux developer. “This move aligns our distribution more closely with standard Fedora while still optimizing performance for Apple Silicon.”

What This Means

For Apple Silicon Mac users, Fedora Asahi Remix 44 delivers a polished, up-to-date Linux experience on hardware that Apple no longer supports with macOS updates. The inclusion of KDE Plasma 6.6 and GNOME 50 means access to cutting-edge desktop features, while the new Plasma Setup wizard simplifies initial configuration.

“This release solidifies Fedora Asahi Remix as a primary option for developers and enthusiasts who need a stable, high-performance Linux environment on M-series Macs,” the spokesperson added. “The retirement of custom packages also signals a maturation of the project—users can expect smoother upgrades in the future.”

Installation and Upgrade

New users can install Fedora Asahi Remix 44 by following the official installation guide. Existing systems running version 42 or 43 can upgrade using either KDE’s Plasma Discover or the DNF system upgrade command. Upgrades via GNOME Software are not supported.

“We encourage users to back up their data before proceeding with an upgrade,” the team advised. “For any Remix-specific issues, please report them in our tracker, or reach out via our Discourse forum or Matrix room.”
